How I became an NQ+ at Shoosmiths?

Jake Bowdler is a 1st year trainee solicitor at Shoosmiths, Jake is on the NQ+ programme at Shoosmiths, an alternative route to qualification. Here he discusses what an NQ+ trainee is and his experience on the programme.

What is an NQ+ trainee?

An NQ+ trainee is a new role created by Shoosmiths, a leading UK law firm, to offer a flexible and innovative way of qualifying as a solicitor. Unlike the traditional training contract, which requires two years of rotating seats in different practice areas, the NQ+ trainee programme allows colleagues who already work at the firm   to qualify in one area of law that you are passionate about and have experience in. This is usually paralegals or legal assistants who are working in a team that have identified a need for a newly qualified solicitor in the near future and have noticed potential in one of their paralegals. NQ+ is available in the firm's core or hub offices, with hub offices being smaller and more agile than the core offices and offer a dynamic and collaborative work environment.

How did I become an NQ+ trainee?

I joined Shoosmiths in 2022 as a paralegal in the corporate department in the Thames Valley office. I had previously completed my law degree and the Legal Practice Course. I decided to join Shoosmiths, as I was impressed by the firm's reputation, culture and values. Something that came to life when I commenced the role. I was also interested in working in corporate, as I enjoyed the adrenaline rush of dealmaking and advising clients on their legal position when bringing a deal together.

I worked hard as a paralegal, and I was given a lot of responsibility and autonomy by my team. I was involved in drafting documents, conducting research, liaising with clients and lawyers for other parties and meetings between all parties. I also participated in the firm's pro bono and CSR initiatives and I joined the Thames Valley office's social and charity committee and volunteered as a mentor through the partnered University of Reading Thrive mentor scheme. I felt valued and supported by my colleagues and supervisors, and I received regular feedback and training to help me develop my skills and knowledge.

After some time working as a paralegal, I approached my team and enquired about the opportunity to become an NQ+ trainee. I was thrilled by this offer, as it meant that I could qualify as a solicitor in the area of law that I loved, without having to go through the conventional process of rotating around the firm and then looking to qualify into corporate. I accepted the offer and I started my NQ+ trainee programme in March 2024.

What is my experience as an NQ+ trainee?

As an NQ+ trainee, I continue to work in the corporate team, but I also have to complete some additional requirements to qualify as a solicitor. These include completing the Professional Skills Course, which covers topics such as advocacy, finance and ethics. I also have to keep a record of my work and achievements, and have regular meetings with my training supervisor, who oversees my progress and provides guidance and support.

I enjoy being an NQ+ trainee, as I feel that I am learning and growing every day. I have more confidence and competence in handling complex matter and the often long hours associated with corporate. I also have more opportunities to interact with clients and other professionals. I also appreciate the flexibility and innovation of the NQ+ trainee programme, as it allows me to tailor my training to my interests and goals, and to benefit from the resources and network of a national firm, while working in a local and friendly office. I am looking forward to qualifying as a solicitor and continuing my career at Shoosmiths.
