The global logistics market, estimated to have a value of USD 228 000 million, is fragmented and governed by a patchwork of regulations. There are many players on the market, large (e.g., Maersk, DHL, Fedex) and small.
One of the larger players, Amazon, is reported to have struck a deal with the European Commission in relation to an alleged breach of EU competition law. Part of the deal to settle the matter and avoid a formal decision is that sellers who use Amazon's platform will no longer be locked into using Amazon Logistics. This is likely to result in more business for Amazon's competitors and it will be interesting to analyse, in a couple of years, what the effects were. More immediately, perhaps not a surprise, in this context, Dave Clark, a senior Amazon executive whose recent resignation was a surprise to the market, has announced he is joining the start-up software logistics company, Flexport.
It will also be interesting to see what the ripple effect will be on the warehouse market, which has had some ups and downs recently, for example, in the UK (Did Amazon WeCrash the warehouse market? | Financial Times (ft.com)).
