British Airways has recently announced that it will launch flights from Southampton Airport to 11 European destinations next year. This is great news for the airport but also for the Solent region as a whole.
It’s evidence that, despite the looming spectre of Brexit and the impact of Covid, Solent remains a viable place to invest. Here’s some other recent announcements:
- A fifth cruise terminal will open at the Port of Southampton in 2021, strengthening its position as the UK’s number one departure port;
- Silicon Wharf will be established at Woolston, a £1.4m operator training centre for electric and hybrid robotic vessels, creating 100 “high value” jobs;
- Fawley Waterside Digital, a £1.5m project, will improve the Waterside’s digital network Waterside alongside planned road improvements;
- Network Rail are planning to double the number of trains running from Portsmouth to Southampton and the surrounding area;
- £56m will transform Portsmouth and South East Hampshire’s transport infrastructure, announced by the Transport Minister earlier this year; and
- SSEN has unveiled an ambition to install 20,000 off-street and 1,200 on-street charging points in Portsmouth over the next decade.
The above highlights that the Solent region is not only an area of growth but is also at the vanguard of new technologies and green innovation.
