Charities and mental health - smiling on Blue Monday

“Tell me now, how do I feel?”

Nobody is under any illusion that January is a tough month, after the Christmas and New Year festivities, when the days are at their darkest and coldest, the news tells us constantly of the increased cost of living and there’s not much to look forward to – unless you enjoy watching Dancing on Ice…

"Blue Monday" is the name given to today, the third Monday in January, and has been coined as the most depressing day of the year.

With one in four of us experiencing depression at some point in our lives, mental health charities help us to view this day as an opportunity – to look after our mental health.

The Mental Health Foundation has 10 top tips for us:

  1. Talk about your feelings
  2. Keep active
  3. Eat well
  4. Drink sensibly
  5. Keep in touch with people - even on the phone
  6. Ask for help
  7. Take a break
  8. Do something you’re good at
  9. Accept who you are
  10. Care for others

“Care for others” – is, after all, what charities do – and the origin of the word “charity” – selfless love for one’s fellow human being.

In our busy lives, finding time for others, and maybe even volunteering for a charity with a cause close to our heart, could help us as much as others.
