The Brexit Freedom Bill (as commonly referred to) will bring with it a whole host of work if the intention is to put to bed all of those pieces of legislation which are a hangover from Brexit.
With a whopping 2,400 pieces of legislation to consider the challenges were clear. Today those challenges have increased considerably as more have been 'found' taking the grand total of retained EU law on the UK statute book to 3,800 laws.
With 290 working days left between now and 31 December 2023, that would mean just over 13 pieces of legislation to be written each day - working of course on the basis of the Bill becoming law today and that there were sufficient legislators available to tackle this enormous task.
With it being a leadership promise for our current Prime Minister and at the same time the EU's Brexit negotiator, Maros Sefcovic, warning in a speech in London on Monday, that it would pile “even more cost” on British businesses at a time of “severe economic strains” caused by soaring energy and food prices, we do wonder whether the timescales may have to slip somewhat and, if so, by how long.
