Whilst no doubt avid football fans were reviewing the final day transfers, Sport Positive Leagues, a company systematically collating environmental sustainability information for football clubs, released the latest environmental sustainability information of the Premier League clubs.
Environmental, social and governance (ESG) reporting and investing is something that not just football but other sports are increasingly under pressure to explore and action, not least in order to mitigate their footprint on climate change and in light of building a more sustainable and resilient future. Athlete activism, exposure in underrepresented sporting areas, and other new audiences and tournaments across various sports provides a great opportunity for clubs to attract new financial opportunities and lead the way on global platforms in respect of ESG, in particular. Not only this, but it’s something that investors are and will be looking into with increasing interest, whether directly or indirectly, given shareholder and societal pressure, and the ongoing sponsorship of major events.
