February has been LGBT+ History Month in the UK, an annual event first observed in 2005. The month has been a celebration of events, people and organisations that pioneered progress on the path to equality.
During the month, Shoosmiths’ LGBT+ network, Proud, reflected on its work since launching in 2019 and restated its commitment to valuing difference.
Proud also asked members to share what the network means to them:
Jamie Donnelly, Trainee Solicitor
“The network has allowed me to meet with colleagues and discuss important issues regarding diversity and inclusion which is something that is very important to me. The Proud network drives the engagement of LGBT+ advocates and allies at all levels of Shoosmiths. One of the most important parts of the Proud Network is the sense of inclusiveness and being able to share my story openly and creating a positive culture within the firm.”
Deborah Gordon Brown, Partner
“I wanted to be part of the Proud network to become a better ally against injustice to the LGBT+ community and to stand and speak in support. I wanted to expand my own knowledge and understanding of discrimination and to support my colleagues in any way they wanted me to. Our networks ensure that the voices of those within it are heard by our own managers and leaders as well as the wider Shoosmiths community and beyond.”
The theme for this year’s LGBT+ History Month is ‘Behind the Lens’ celebrating LGBT+ people’s contribution to cinema and TV. We asked members of Proud about the significance of their favourite LGBT+ films and TV programmes and share some of their responses below.

A theme which has been highlighted throughout the month centres on the importance of visibility and the role this plays in feeling valued and accepted. We recognise the need for diverse perspectives and we embrace difference in line with our firmwide value of ‘Being Ourselves’.
