Shoosmiths colleagues volunteer with Street League students

Since 2021, Shoosmiths has been supporting Street League - a charity that uses the power of sport to support young people into employment; and since the Shoosmiths Foundation awarded Street League with funding it has continued a relationship with the charity, including through offering support with volunteering days and employability workshops.

Volunteering Days

In April 2023  four Leeds trainee solicitors used their volunteering day to support Street League. This involved supporting students to prepare for their upcoming Maths exams (including a round of football penalties to help aid their understanding of bar charts!) and a number of games and activities. The students particularly enjoyed playing pictionary and learning that perhaps Shoosmiths are better lawyers than artists…

"We very much enjoyed spending our volunteering day at Street League. It was clear to see that Street League play a vital role in helping young people develop the education and skills they need to ultimately enter the world of work or pursue further education. During our visit, the students were working towards their level 1 and level 2 maths qualifications and we enjoyed helping them with various maths exercises. We finished off the day with a game of Pictionary which the students really engaged with and which allowed us to get to know the students a little more." Jasmine Cracknell, Trainee Solicitor

Employability Event

Also in April Shoosmiths ran a half-day employability event at the Leeds office for ten Street League students. This event involved conducting mock interviews and facilitating two workshops. These sessions helped the students understand how to complete job applications, gain confidence in interviews, and learn more about roles available within a law firm.

Here is what some of the young people had to say:

"It was amazing. Because they answered all my questions in good detail to help us out."

"I enjoyed the experience talking to all of the staff and discussing all their different roles. I would love to go back in the future."

"All of the staff were really nice and didn’t make me feel nervous during the interview. It was fun to have that experience before the real thing."

Shoosmiths looks forward to continuing this relationship with Street League in the future. For more information about Street League, please click here
