Richard is a real estate lawyer with wide experience of acting for banks, building societies and secondary lenders. 

Richard provides a full property service for lenders which includes refinance and security work. He has for many years provided a 24/48hr turnaround service for relationship managers on property queries and document checking (lease reviews, planning documents, sale contracts, etc).

It is in the area of enforcement, restructuring and recovery that he has gained a national reputation, providing project management expertise on large scale disposal projects and high value/complex real estate. He acts for insolvency practitioners and fixed charge receivers in both disposal transactions and asset management. He has successfully worked with stakeholders, IP’s and agents to provide considerable improvements on anticipated realisations and has also worked with many borrowers and their advisors on consensual work-outs and refinances.

Richard joined Shoosmiths' in October 2016, joining the firm from Addleshaw Goddard in Leeds. He is based in Leeds and works with clients across the UK, and also leads projects with colleagues covering Scotland, NI and Ireland.

He also leads the corporate support function in Leeds, acting on the property aspects of solvent and insolvent restructurings, acquisitions and disposals of businesses. 

Richard brings a wealth of experience across a wide range of asset classes, and his recent activity includes advising on high value projects, local and national. Some examples of his current and recent deal activity are listed below:

  • acted on the administration of Wilko for PwC  which includes their retail portfolio and distribution centres. management ;
  • led the acquisition, funding, construction, letting and sale of 500+ apartment units student accommodation for Hudd Student Living;
  • completed on the sale of Freeport Shopping Centre in Braintree for FRP as administrators. 
  • produced CLLS seller certificates for a lender and buyer on a distressed hotel portfolio ahead of a prepack sale;
  • handled the due diligence for Hilco Capital for the purposes of funding the administrators of RAD development in London.
  • supported Tasty plc in dealing with various operational properties following a successful restructuring plan.
  • advised Interpath on the administration of Monarch Aircraft Engineering and sale of hangars and associated asset management;
  • Advised funders and banks, administrators and receivers on a number of part built residential development sites,  including Tolent Construction, Nu Space Homes, CPD Barnstaple and Artisan portfolio;
Richard also leads the Charity Committee in the Leeds office
