Robert qualified as a tax solicitor in the Eversheds Birmingham office in 1991. He moved to the Eversheds Nottingham and Derby offices in 1993 to found the corporate tax team there. He set up and lead the property tax group in 2000 and was also made a partner that year.
 
In 2003 he joined Hammonds (now Squire Patton Boggs) as a partner and head of the Birmingham tax team.
 
In 2009 he set up his own business with two other partners, Adducere LLP, which specialises in property development and funding structures.
 
In 2021 he became a consultant for Shoosmiths supporting the real estate tax team.
